Hemfer XT Tablet 10’s belongs to a class of medications called ‘haematinics‘ primarily used to treat anaemia (lack of blood) that occurs mainly due to poor diet, poor absorption of food, or increased folate use in the body (in pregnancy).
Anaemia is a condition in which the body does not have enough red blood cells for carrying adequate oxygen required to various body tissues.
Hemfer XT Tablet 10’s is a combination of two drugs: Ferrous ascorbate (iron supplement) and folic acid (a form of vitamin B9).
Hemfer XT Tablet 10’s works by increasing red blood cells (RBC) and haemoglobin (a protein) production in the body. As a result, an adequate number of RBC is produced in the body, so that body’s each tissue gets sufficient supply of oxygen.
Take Hemfer XT Tablet 10’s as prescribed by your doctor. You are advised to take Hemfer XT Tablet 10’s for as long as your doctor has prescribed it for you based on your medical condition.
In some cases, you may experience vomiting, nausea, stomach upset or dark coloured stool. Most of these side effects of Hemfer XT Tablet 10’s do not require medical attention and gradually resolve over time. However, if the side effects persist or worsen, please consult your doctor.

Directions for Use
The oral tablet form of Hemfer-XT Tablet 10’s can be taken with or without food as prescribed by your doctor and swallowed whole with a glass of water.
Do not crush, chew or break it. The injection form of Hemfer-XT Tablet 10’s is given by a doctor or nurse. Do not self-administer.

Drug Interactions
Drug-Drug Interaction: Hemfer-XT Tablet 10’s may have interaction with anticonvulsants (phenobarbital, primidone, phenytoin, sodium valproate, carbamazepine), antibiotics (chloramphenicol, cotrimoxazole, trimethoprim), antimaniac drug (lithium), water tablet (triamterene), anti-inflammatory drug (sulfasalazine), painkillers (aspirin), anticancer drug (methotrexate).
Drug- Food Interaction: Avoid intake of dairy products, coffee or tea with Hemfer-XT Tablet 10’s at the same time as they may reduce the absorption of Hemfer-XT Tablet 10’s.

However, please consult a doctor before taking Hemfer-XT Tablet 10’s with phenytoin.
Is Hemfer-XT Tablet 10’s safe for hemochromatosis patients?
Hemfer-XT Tablet 10’s is not recommended for hemochromatosis (excessive iron in the body) patients as it may increase the risk of adverse effects. Therefore, it is advised to inform your doctor if you have any iron overload conditions before taking Hemfer-XT Tablet 10’s.
