PTU 50MG contains Propylthiouracil, which belongs to a group of medicines called antithyroid drugs
WHAT PTU 50MG IS USED FOR?
It is used in the treatment and management of an overactive thyroid gland (hyperthyroidism)

Are allergic to any of the ingredients of this medicine
Have a rare hereditary condition affecting the way your body handles some sugars
Have liver or kidney problems
PREGNANCY & BREAST FEEDING
It may be taken during pregnancy, but it may affect your unborn child?s thyroid gland. If you need to take this medicine during pregnancy, you should be given the lowest effective dose and your thyroid function should be checked every four to six weeks
If you need to take PTU 50MG whilst you are breast-feeding, you should be given the lowest effective dose and the infant?s development and thyroid function should be monitored
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor for advice before taking this medicine
CHILDREN & ADOLESCENTS
PTU 50MG are not recommended for use in children under six years of age
DRIVING & USING MACHINES
PTU 50MG are not known to affect the ability to drive or operate machinery
INTERACTIONS:
Taking another medicine while you are taking Propylthiouracil Tablets can affect how it or the other medicine works. Please inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following (or any other medication):.
Theophylline, a drug used to treat asthma
Digoxin, used to treat problems with the rhythm of your heart
Beta-blockers, used to treat high blood pressure
Radioiodine, used to treat an overactive thyroid gland
DIRECTIONS & FOR USE:
Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you
If you have kidney or liver disease your doctor will reduce your dose according to your condition
If you take more PTU 50MG
If you accidentally take too many tablets contact your doctor or nearest hospital immediately
Signs of overdose tablets include being sick, stomach pain, headache, fever, joint pain, itching, being pale, tiredness, frequent infections, unusual bleeding or unexplained bruising
If you forget to take PTU 50MG
If you forget to take a dose, take another as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, then do not take the missed dose at all. Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten tablet
If you stop taking PTU 50MG
You should continue to take PTU 50MG for as long as your doctor tells you. Do not stop taking the medicine without talking to your doctor first
SIDE EFFECTS OF PTU 50MG:
SERIOUS
Sore throat
Fever
Mouth ulcers
Unusual bleeding or unexplained bruising
Unusual tiredness or weakness
Feeling generally unwell
Allergic reactions such as difficulty in breathing, cough
Swelling of lymph glands
Arthritis
COMMON
Feeling sick or being sick
Stomach upsets
Taste disturbance
Headaches
Hearing impairment
Mild skin rashes
Itching or reddening of the skin
Hair loss
Pain or stiffness of your muscles or joints
Abnormal results of liver function tests
